Upgrade Guide

Helix titanium frame

This is a guide to help you upgrade your Helix. It will get more detailed as time goes on, but for now it includes some basic guidelines, dimensions, weights and some known working configurations. Still coming are the wheel build guide including dimensions for wheel dish.

Upgrade Guide

Component Details Known Configs Specs
Brake Calipers
  • Calipers must be slim in width. Only TRP Spyke and Spyre and Rever cable actuated will work. Avid BB5/7 and other cable actuated calipers are too wide
  • Flat bar and drop-bar brake levers have different pull ratios and require different calipers. For example, TRP makes Spyke for flat bar and Spyre for drop bar. Some lever companies make flat bar levers that work with dropbar calipers and vice-versa
  • Some hybrid cable/hydraulic calipers will work
  • Most hydraulic calipers will work but be sure to use 5mm hydraulic housing
  • Caliper max width: 43mm
  • Must be post mount
  • cable: TRP Spyke and Spyre, REVER MCX-2
  • cable/hydraulic: TRP HY/RD
  • hydraulic: Sram, Shimano, Formula, Magura, Hope and others

Standard

TRP Spyke
185g with screws

Ultralight

Formula Cura XC, 2 piston hydraulic
Brake Levers
  • Most MTB cable actuated brake levers will work.
  • Avid BB5/7 are popular and work well.
  • Flat bar and drop-bar brake levers have different pull ratios and require different calipers. For example, TRP makes Spyke for flat bar and Spyre for drop bar. Some lever companies make flat bar levers that work with dropbar calipers and vice-versa
  • Be weary of off-brand levers that are extremely light, they work very poorly and are very flimsy
  • cable: Avid BB5/BB7, TRP, Mr Control
  • hydraulic: Sram, Shimano, Formula, Magura, Hope and others

Standard

Avid BB5 (155g/pair)

Ultralight

Formula Cura XC, Al/Carbon
Crankset
  • Crankset is one part that needs special consideration. The right crankarm can interfere with the swingarm when folded, so ask the supplier to send you a fitment chart to be able to check the crankarm distance from frame center (see image below)
  • Max 30mm spindle diameter (see BB description below for more details)
  • Must be 1X single chainring (double or triple chainrings will not work)
  • Must have a direct mount chainring so that the chainring bolts do not interfere with the rear tire clearance when folded. Some boost cranks with a traditional spider will also work, but be sure that the spider and chainring bolts do not extend past the chainring backside.
  • Max length: Any length but be careful of crankarm clearance at swingarm when folded. Image below shows swingarm when folded. The crankarm must clear the blue tubes.
  • Most Sram MTB cranks, Most Shimano MTB cranks, Cane Creek eeWings (165mm & 170mm)

Standard

SRAM NX, 24mm steel spindle, 165mm arm
665g

Ultralight

SRAM XX1 Eagle DUB, 29mm aluminum spindle 165mm arm
435g (including 38t chainring)
Chainring
  • Must be 1X single chainring (double or triple chainrings will not work)
  • Chainring must be Boost spacing (3mm outward offset) for tire clearance when folded
  • Must be narrow-wide tooth profile otherwise chain may drop when folded
  • Must have a direct mount interface to mount to the stock crankset
  • Max size will depend on largest rear sprocket on cassette
  • Sram, RaceFace, e13, Easton, Wolf Tooth Components, Absolute Black, Garbaruk
Max chainring Cassette largest tooth
46t x-32t
46t x-33t
44t x-36t

Ultralight

SRAM DUB BSA MTB73
72g
Cassette
  • You can upgrade the cassette to any configuration. Everything from a 9 tooth sprocket up to a 51t will work. The limiting factor is the front chainring. Anything above 36t will need a smaller front chainring.
  • Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo and others
Max chainring Cassette largest tooth
46t x-32t
46t x-33t
44t x-36t
36t x-42t

359g

Ultralight

e13 XCX Plus 11 speed 9-34 (271g)
Derailleur
  • Any road, MTB and other type derailleur will work, however we recommend Shimano "Shadow" derailleurs because they are low profile and will minimize folded dimensions and also the cable pull clamp will not interfere with the steerer knob when folded.
  • Any speed is compatible
  • Electronic shifting will work for both Shimano and Sram
  • Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo and others

Standard

Shimano SLX RD-M675, KRDM675SGS (med cage, black, direct mount, clutch, shadow+)

  • Rise: 12mm

Ultralight

Yavis carbon, similar geometry (145g)
Stem
  • 28.6mm steerer diameter
  • 31.8mm bar diameter
  • A longer stem will affect the folded dimensions slightly.
  • It is not recommended to change to a carbon fiber stem as this is a critical component
  • Any stem with 28.6mm steerer diameter

Standard

ART SB501
130g
  • Steerer diameter: 28.6mm
  • Handlebar diameter: 31.8mm
  • Length/Reach: 50mm

Rims
  • The stock rims are a very durable road/touring rim made from 6061 aluminum with a welded seam (stronger and lighter than pinned)
  • The ultralight spec will use Stan's Crest MK3 rims, they are a strong and very lightweight at 300g. This rim can be also run tubeless but only at about 60psi. They are the lightest 24" rim that we could find, even lighter than carbon rims which came in at about 360g.
  • Any 507mm (24") rim

Standard

Rear Hub
  • Many aftermarket hubs will work but be sure to check that the hub manufactuer offers custom end caps to be able to adjust the spacing from the more common 142mm to 135mm. Also be sure to check the end cap diameter is max 21mm left and 19mm right.

Standard

Formula RXC-142A

Front Hub
  • The front hub is custon to Helix and is manufactured by Formula. It is made by 3D forging and CNC machining.
  • There are no aftermarket options for this. The bearings are high quality stainless steel sealed bearings and are an industry standard size and replacements are available from us or any quality bearing supplier.

Internal gear Hub (IGH)
  • The Shimano Alfine 11 is Shimano's top of the line internal geared hub. It is known to be very reliable and has top performance specs in comparison to the other IGH hubs available.
  • Alfine 11 comes in an electronic shifting version as well which is also compatible.
  • At the moment, no other hubs are compatible.
  • Rohlhoff, Kindernay and NuVinci will not work because they use a dual cable shift mechanism and Helix only supports a single shift cable; also for Rohloff the shift mechanism is on the left side which interferes with folding.

Some notes on the Alfine setup:

  • The Alfine 11 SG-S700 has a steel axle with a through hole. The nuts that secure it to the dropouts are further secured with the secondary safety axle and nut assembly. It is critical to reinstall this when removing the wheel for servicing.
  • The Alfine 11 axle has been cut at the Helix factory to allow for front wheel clearance when folded.
  • Helix ships with an Alfine 11 and is NOT compatible with the Alfine 8 because it doesn't have the through hole in the axle. Our new titanium dropouts will have a serrated nut that will not require the use of the secondary safety axle and will allow the use of Alfine 8 as well.
  • Alfine 11 and Alfine 11 Di2 only
